Bitcoin is approaching another significant market event on October 30, when roughly $11 billion in options contracts are scheduled to expire. Following the Federal Reserve’s latest interest-rate decision, traders are assessing whether BTC can maintain its current levels as derivatives positions are settled and adjusted. If the market absorbs the Fed’s announcement without renewed selling, Bitcoin could experience a relief rally.
On October 28, the Federal Reserve held its benchmark interest rate at 3.75%–4%, meeting market expectations. However, two policymakers voted against the decision, favoring a 0.25-percentage-point rate increase instead. Although the announcement removed one immediate source of uncertainty, questions about the Fed’s future policy direction remain important for risk assets.
With the rate decision behind them, Bitcoin traders can focus more closely on market positioning, liquidity, and investor demand. The upcoming options expiry could introduce fresh volatility as traders adjust their exposure.
Bitcoin Price Outlook: $11B Options Expiry Puts BTC in Focus
Around $11 billion worth of Bitcoin options contracts will expire on Friday, October 30. The substantial amount of outstanding open interest makes the event a potential source of short-term price volatility.
Data released ahead of the expiry indicated that call options outnumbered put options. One estimate placed the put-to-call ratio at approximately 0.53, suggesting that open call positions were significantly higher than put positions. Calls typically benefit from rising prices, while puts can help investors protect against potential losses.
The imbalance could be interpreted as a sign of bullish positioning, but it does not necessarily mean traders expect Bitcoin to rally. Some call options are used in hedging strategies, while put contracts can serve purposes other than expressing bearish expectations.
The $78,000 level has also attracted attention in estimates surrounding the upcoming settlement. This price is often described as the maximum pain level, referring to the theoretical price at which the combined payouts to option holders would be minimized.
However, Bitcoin is not necessarily expected to settle at or near $78,000. Its actual price will depend on market demand, available liquidity, and trading activity as expiration approaches.
For bullish traders, a more favorable outcome would involve Bitcoin holding its support levels through the settlement. If market makers rebalance their hedges and expiring contracts disappear without triggering significant selling, the market could have more room to recover.
Fed Decision Removes Immediate Risk, but December Remains Uncertain
Although the latest FOMC meeting has concluded, uncertainty surrounding the Fed’s next move continues. Policymakers maintained the current interest-rate range while noting that economic activity remained strong and inflation was still elevated.
The two votes favoring a rate increase indicate that some officials remain concerned about inflationary pressures. This makes it harder to interpret the unchanged rate decision as an entirely positive signal for financial markets.
For Bitcoin, a key consideration is whether investors had already anticipated the Fed’s decision. When policymakers deliver an expected outcome without a major surprise, market participants often shift their focus toward liquidity, positioning, and upcoming economic releases.
This change in focus could support a relief rally if investors view the announcement as less restrictive than expected. However, concerns about another rate increase later in the year could continue to weigh on risk appetite and limit Bitcoin’s recovery.
The Federal Reserve’s next meeting is scheduled for December 8–9. Until then, inflation data, employment reports, and policymakers’ public comments could influence expectations for the next interest-rate decision.
Can Bitcoin Turn the Options Expiry Into a Bullish Catalyst?
The latest Fed decision has removed one immediate event risk, but uncertainty over future monetary policy has not disappeared. Bitcoin’s upcoming options expiry now represents another important test for the market.
A relatively orderly settlement could help stabilize prices and give buyers an opportunity to rebuild momentum. However, changes in hedging activity and liquidity could also produce additional volatility, particularly if Bitcoin approaches important support levels.
A bullish breakout remains possible, but traders will need evidence of sustained buying demand before concluding that the options expiry marks a lasting reversal in Bitcoin’s price trend.
