CME FedWatch data showed traders assigning almost a 56% probability to a 25-basis-point Federal Reserve rate hike at the September 16, 2026, FOMC meeting, CNBC reported.
The market repricing followed Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh’s speech at the Jackson Hole symposium, bringing expectations for the September policy decision almost to a 50-50 split.
For Bitcoin and the broader crypto market, the development primarily represents a change in expectations for monetary policy. It does not, by itself, confirm that cryptocurrencies have already reacted to the shift.
CNBC’s report points to changing interest-rate expectations and a rise in short-term Treasury yields, but provides no evidence that the repricing directly triggered a move in Bitcoin, altcoins, derivatives markets or crypto liquidations.
FOMC September 2026 Odds Shift After Warsh’s Jackson Hole Remarks
Rate-hike expectations varied across prediction markets. Kalshi traders gave a 48% chance of a quarter-point increase, while Polymarket participants placed the probability at 49%. Meanwhile, CME FedWatch showed fed funds futures pricing in almost a 56% likelihood of a 25-basis-point hike.
That represents a notable change from before Warsh’s speech, when markets were assigning nearly 70% odds to the Fed keeping rates unchanged in September, according to CNBC.
Expectations had initially tilted toward a possible hike after the Fed’s July meeting. Three FOMC members opposed the decision to maintain the existing rate and argued that additional tightening was warranted because inflation remained elevated.
Those expectations later weakened following a softer-than-expected July employment report. The data showed job losses, while inflation eased but continued to exceed the Federal Reserve’s 2% target.
Warsh pushed back against the idea that recent improvements in inflation were enough to confirm a sustained decline in underlying price pressures. During his Jackson Hole address, he said the Fed needed greater confidence that underlying inflation was moving toward its target both clearly and quickly.
What Higher September Rate-Hike Odds Could Mean for Bitcoin
The current data point to a significant change in expectations surrounding September monetary policy, but they do not establish a definite impact on crypto prices.
Bitcoin remains sensitive to shifts in broader financial conditions and risk appetite, making Fed policy an important consideration for traders. However, the available reporting does not show that the latest adjustment in rate expectations has already produced a measurable Bitcoin or crypto-market reaction.
Treasury markets did respond to the shift. CNBC reported that the two-year Treasury yield climbed to its highest point since late July. Because two-year yields tend to closely reflect expectations for near-term Federal Reserve policy, the move indicates that bond traders were adjusting their outlook for September.
Inflation continues to be a major consideration for policymakers. Fed Governor Lisa D. Cook said in an August 5 speech that the personal consumption expenditures price index increased 3.7% over the year through June, while core PCE inflation rose 3.3%.
Cook said inflation remained above a comfortable level and indicated that she would be open to supporting a rate increase if conditions required it. However, she also acknowledged that continued disinflation could bring price growth closer to the Fed’s target without additional tightening.
The labor market is another important part of the Fed’s decision. Cook cited a June unemployment rate of 4.2% and described employment conditions as stable, with both hiring and layoffs remaining subdued.
As a result, incoming inflation and employment figures could play a major role in determining whether the Fed ultimately delivers a rate increase at its September meeting.
