Bitcoin Slides $2,000 as Crypto Market Faces Flash Crash

Why is crypto falling today — or, more precisely, what triggered the latest move? Bitcoin slipped below $84,000 after failing to maintain its push toward the $87,000-$87,800 resistance zone. The drop followed the creation of four new Hyperliquid wallets that collectively deposited $1 million in USDC and opened 40x leveraged short positions totaling 148.49 BTC, with a combined notional value of around $12.5 million.

The four addresses funded their Hyperliquid accounts with a combined $1 million in USDC before taking the short positions. Their trades amounted to 148.49 BTC at 40x leverage, representing roughly $12.5 million in exposure. Bitcoin then fell through $84,000, making the timing of the trades look particularly notable after the fact.

The reported order of events is straightforward: the wallets deposited funds, opened leveraged BTC shorts, and Bitcoin later broke below $84,000 after failing to hold near resistance. Liquidations among leveraged long positions also appear to have intensified the selling.

Leverage tends to magnify market movements. As prices decline, long positions can be liquidated, generating additional sell orders and accelerating the drop. If prices reverse higher, short positions can face pressure, with covering and liquidations potentially creating additional buying demand.

Attention has now shifted to the $80,000 area, which traders are viewing as an important support zone following the break below $84,000. If Bitcoin holds above that level, a recovery could develop. A deeper break, however, could trigger additional liquidations and lead to greater volatility.

At this stage, the key takeaway is the unusual timing rather than evidence of wrongdoing. The four wallets established 40x BTC shorts before Bitcoin declined, while long liquidations added to the selling pressure. But the timing alone does not prove that the traders had advance knowledge or caused the crash. More verified data on their positions and market activity near $80,000 would be needed to draw stronger conclusions.
