Binance’s CZ Calls for America to Lead the Future of Crypto

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, better known as CZ, shared his views on a wide range of issues in exclusive interviews with CoinDesk earlier this month.

CZ has recently returned to the spotlight. In two interviews, he discussed the crypto exchange he built, the outlook for the U.S. crypto market, and his activities since serving a four-month prison sentence in 2024 for Bank Secrecy Act violations.

CZ back in focus

Despite keeping a relatively low profile in the U.S. after his sentence, CZ has begun reengaging with the industry domestically.

Why it matters

Although he no longer runs Binance, CZ remains a powerful figure in crypto. He is still the majority shareholder of both Binance and Binance.US, continues to invest across the sector, and draws strong attention whenever he appears publicly.

Key points

CZ attributed the 2026 crypto downturn to a mix of factors, including capital flowing into artificial intelligence, geopolitical tensions, and the typical four-year market cycle.

He also outlined ambitions for Binance.US, saying the platform should tap into Binance Global’s liquidity as part of a broader effort to strengthen the U.S. crypto ecosystem.

In Washington, D.C., CZ said his goal is to clear up “misunderstandings” about himself and Binance, adding that his guilty plea has not damaged his reputation.

At the same time, he emphasized he has no plans to run another exchange, preferring instead to act as an informal advisor to companies he backs.

Policy watch

There is still little clarity on the status of a key crypto bill, with the ethics provision remaining a major sticking point. According to Politico, White House crypto liaison Patrick Witt said any agreement would require presidential approval.

Negotiations are ongoing, but no concrete details have emerged. With only 20 working days left before September 1 on the Senate calendar, time for debate is running short.

Lawmakers have already cleared several priorities, including a housing bill that temporarily blocks the Federal Reserve from issuing a central bank digital currency, as well as a reconciliation funding package earlier this month.

Still pending are the reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and upcoming work on the farm bill and National Defense Authorization Act.
