Hunter Biden has stepped forward to defend his LAPTOP memecoin ahead of its scheduled Wednesday launch, presenting the project as an attempt to reclaim a controversy that has remained attached to his name for years. He also took aim at Donald Trump’s TRUMP token, describing it as a “grift.”
Biden said LAPTOP is intended to represent “resilience, redemption and recovery.” The project plans to distribute part of its supply to nearly one million wallets that reportedly lost money on TRUMP.
Addressing the skepticism surrounding the project in an X post early Wednesday in Asia, Biden questioned why a token linked to a subject that had been exploited by others should be dismissed outright.
He pointed to the sharp decline in TRUMP from its 2025 peak, claiming that almost one million wallets collectively suffered around $3.8 billion in losses. LAPTOP will allocate 20% of its total supply to community airdrops, with some of those tokens earmarked for wallets that lost money on TRUMP.
The token’s economic model also includes a 30% allocation connected to political, cryptocurrency and cultural predictions. If a prediction comes true, the associated tokens will be destroyed, while tokens connected to incorrect predictions will be directed toward charity.
Founders, including Biden, will receive another 30% of the supply. According to Biden, those holdings will be restricted by lockups and vesting requirements.
He also warned prospective buyers against assuming that he or other people behind the project would attempt to increase the token’s market value. Biden framed LAPTOP as more of a form of expression than simply an investment asset.
The defense comes after LAPTOP faced criticism from crypto traders earlier in the week.
Kraken removed a promotional post featuring the token following backlash from traders. Andrew Callaghan, the journalist and creator of Channel 5, also distanced himself from the project after his audience was included in a proposed token distribution.
Base, the blockchain developed by Coinbase where LAPTOP is set to launch, made clear that it was not a partner in the project. Base founder Jesse Pollak said the team had been approached by the project but deliberately chose not to participate in either its development or promotion.
The LAPTOP concept draws directly from the controversy surrounding the laptop attributed to Biden. Information reportedly obtained from the device included emails concerning his overseas business activities as well as private photographs, messages and videos involving drug use and his personal life. The laptop became a major source of political attacks and fueled years of online memes.
Biden is now seeking to transform that history into the identity of the new token, turning a controversy that was repeatedly used against him into the central theme of LAPTOP.
As he put it, the laptop was once turned into a political weapon; now, he has turned it into a token.
