Donald Trump’s TRUMP meme coin surged to a market capitalization of almost $15 billion before retreating as the initial online hype faded. Now, Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP meme coin is set to launch on September 9, drawing its name from the laptop controversy that became a major political issue in the run-up to the 2020 U.S. election.
LAPTOP has been presented as a satirical answer to Trump’s own experiments with cryptocurrency, turning a political controversy associated with the Biden family into a tradable meme asset. The project also plans to reward certain TRUMP holders who lost money through an airdrop.
Hunter Biden has promoted the launch with a video compilation featuring conservative politicians and commentators discussing the laptop story. The montage includes clips of Trump making remarks closely tied to longstanding conservative criticism of the Biden family.
That political history is at the heart of LAPTOP’s branding. Yet even before trading begins, the token’s proposed distribution model has sparked criticism from parts of the crypto community.
LAPTOP Tokenomics Put Investors on Edge
The project intends to create 1 billion LAPTOP tokens and launch them on Base. Its proposed allocation divides the supply between an airdrop, founders, conditional burns, charitable donations and expenses related to the launch.
Founders, including Hunter Biden, are expected to receive 30% of the total supply. Another 20% has been designated for an airdrop targeting people who lost money on TRUMP as well as other selected participants.
The proposed recipients also include Hunter Biden’s Substack subscribers and individuals on a mailing list maintained by Andrew Callaghan, the creator and host of Channel 5.
A further 30% of the supply could be destroyed depending on specific political or market conditions. Reporting first published by The Wall Street Journal said the tokens could be burned if a Democrat wins the 2028 presidential election or if LAPTOP’s valuation surpasses that of TRUMP.
The remaining 20% is planned for charitable purposes and costs associated with launching the project.
The team has said founder allocations will be subject to lockups and vesting schedules. Another account has been described as holding tokens tied to predictions involving politics, cryptocurrency and culture, with different outcomes determining whether those tokens are burned or directed toward charity.
Backlash Builds Before LAPTOP Trading Starts
The project has already received a mixed response from crypto traders, with critics questioning whether LAPTOP could become another celebrity-backed meme coin designed primarily to capitalize on public attention.
Callaghan moved to distance himself from the project after discovering that his mailing list was part of the proposed distribution. He said he and his team had no involvement beyond supplying the subscriber list to help Hunter Biden reach a larger audience.
Kraken also removed a promotional post about LAPTOP after facing criticism from traders.
Base officials likewise emphasized that the network was not involved in designing or promoting the token. Base founder Jesse Pollak said the project had contacted his team, but Base decided against participating in its development or marketing.
The controversy highlights an important distinction between a token being deployed on a blockchain and receiving direct endorsement from the network or a major crypto company.
It also shows how distribution partners and promotional campaigns can quickly become controversial, particularly when a meme coin is built around a political figure and a highly divisive event.
LAPTOP’s Market Debut Remains Uncertain
There is currently no clear indication of what LAPTOP will be worth once trading begins. Its connection to Hunter Biden, the notoriety of the laptop controversy and the planned airdrop for certain TRUMP holders could generate significant interest, but its eventual valuation will depend on market demand after launch.
Traders will also be watching how the project’s tokenomics perform in practice, particularly the founder allocation, airdrop structure, conditional burn mechanism and funds designated for charity and launch expenses.
LAPTOP is part of a broader wave of politically themed meme coins whose popularity is often driven by recognizable figures and viral narratives.
By turning the long-running laptop controversy into a cryptocurrency project, Hunter Biden is giving the political saga a new financial dimension. Whether that strategy attracts sustained investor interest or reinforces concerns over celebrity-driven crypto launches will become clearer once LAPTOP begins trading.
