Bitcoin Signals Fresh Rally With Golden Cross Formation

Bitcoin has entered golden-cross territory, with its daily chart now flashing a technical signal that could support a longer-term bullish outlook. The development marks an important milestone for market bulls, although history suggests caution is still warranted.

The golden cross occurs when Bitcoin’s 50-day simple moving average rises above its 200-day moving average. Traders generally interpret the crossover as evidence that shorter-term price momentum has strengthened enough to surpass the asset’s longer-term trend, potentially opening the door to a sustained rally.

Bitcoin has recorded 12 golden crosses over its history, but the indicator has produced inconsistent results. Only three of those signals continued to hold for a full year, although those instances were followed by average gains of roughly 250% over 12 months.

The other nine cases with available three-month data delivered a much smaller average return of 24.9%.

That history means Bitcoin’s latest golden cross should not automatically be viewed as confirmation of a prolonged bull market. Previous signals have generated premature bullish setups or bull traps about three times more frequently than they have preceded sustained multi-year rallies.

Even so, the crossover gives traders another bullish technical development to monitor as Bitcoin attempts to build on its recent price strength.

Bitcoin was trading around $78,650 at the time of writing, down 0.6% from midnight UTC, according to CoinDesk data.
