The x402 protocol has powered over 1.43 million agent-driven transactions and facilitated 4,463 XRP in merchant settlements on the XRP Ledger, offering the first tangible evidence of real-world adoption of agentic payments.
In recent Ripple developments, the XRP Ledger recorded 1,434,517 autonomous AI agent transactions as of July 22, 2026—a 127% jump since the x402 protocol was integrated on June 9.
A total of 129 merchants processed settlements worth 4,463.24 XRP and 1,895.14 RLUSD through machine-to-machine payment channels. At the same time, active wallet addresses hit a record 8.45 million, according to CoinMarketCap.
This milestone provides the first sustained indication that a purpose-built agentic payments layer on a public blockchain can drive merchant uptake and generate measurable settlement volume within weeks of launch—without relying on speculative trading.
Meanwhile, XRP is down 0.5% over the past 24 hours, trading at $1.12. Holding the $1.10 support level remains critical for any potential move toward $1.20, with daily trading volume standing at $924 million.
The x402 protocol functions by leveraging the HTTP 402 “payment required” response, enabling AI agents to transact directly with other agents or services—paying for compute, data, or API access without manual wallet handling or human approval.
Transactions settle within seconds on the XRP Ledger, with fees burned on each transfer, gradually reducing circulating supply with every agentic payment.
RippleX head of engineering J. Ayo Akinyele described current volumes as an early benchmark, projecting that the network could handle between 10 million and 100 million agentic transactions over the next two years.
The launch of x402 on June 9 was followed by Ripple’s XRPL AI Starter Kit release on June 10—a developer toolkit that allows AI agents to process payments on the ledger, including integrations with the Claude API.
Ripple has also joined the x402 Foundation under the Linux Foundation and expanded the XRPL AI Hub, a platform offering real-time tracking of x402 payment activity, developer tools, and AI agent integration support. The hub was built with contributions from Ripple developers and the XRP Ledger Foundation.
Data from boerse-global.de shows XRP settlement volume via x402 has surged 289% since the XRPL AI Starter Kit launch. RLUSD plays a complementary role, reflecting a dual-asset strategy where XRP handles crypto-native settlement while RLUSD provides stability for counterparties requiring a stablecoin.
At the WebX conference in mid-July, Ripple vice president Fiona Murray noted that monthly transaction volume on the XRP Ledger has increased twelvefold since the launch of RLUSD.
Despite strong network activity, institutional signals remain mixed. On July 20, S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital launched the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index, which includes 18 assets selected based on market capitalization and liquidity. XRP was notably excluded without explanation. S&P’s Cathy Clay said the index prioritizes demonstrable economic activity over price momentum.
The focus is now shifting from whether the XRP Ledger can generate transaction volume—recently confirmed at 1.43 million payments—to whether revenue recognition frameworks for digital assets can keep pace with protocol-level utility.
On-chain data indicates that wallets holding between 100,000 and 100 million XRP increased their positions by 2.8% over five weeks, while large inflows to Binance dropped to their lowest levels since January 2025. Since November 2025, XRP spot ETF inflows have reached nearly $1.5 billion.
The gap between XRPL’s growing transaction metrics and its absence from institutional benchmarks could narrow if the x402 Foundation’s multi-chain strategy succeeds. By May 2026, x402 transactions across 14 blockchains had already surpassed 160 million, though consistent revenue generation will be key to meeting S&P’s inclusion criteria.
