XRP Ledger Batch Upgrade Approaches Activation Amid Mixed Demand Signals

XRP has risen 22.2% over the past week to $1.58, putting the token’s latest rally ahead of a September 29 deadline for the XRP Ledger’s updated Batch amendment. As of September 20, 30 of the network’s 35 validators had voted in favor of the upgrade. That support is above the required threshold, although it remains subject to change before the activation date.

The bigger issue for XRP holders is whether the upgraded ledger can generate additional demand for the token. The amendment’s approval and XRP’s market demand are two separate questions.

That distinction has become increasingly relevant as traders assess XRP derivatives positioning and the recent reset in open interest ahead of the deadline. While the token’s price has moved higher, the protocol upgrade is progressing according to a separate set of factors.

What the Batch Upgrade Adds to the XRP Ledger

The Batch amendment allows between two and eight standard XRP Ledger transactions to be combined into one outer transaction. That transaction controls how the individual operations within the batch are executed.

The upgrade introduces four different modes, giving institutional users more flexibility when managing transactions and settlement risks.

The All or Nothing mode is particularly relevant to securities settlement. It allows the asset transfer and payment to either complete together or be canceled together, preventing a situation in which one side settles while the other remains incomplete.

Batch can also allow exchanges, wallets and marketplaces to include their own fees within a customer transaction. This means the fee and the underlying transaction can be processed as part of the same settlement.

September 29 Activation Depends on Validator Support

The Batch amendment needs support from at least 28 of the XRP Ledger’s 35 validators, or more than 80%, for 14 consecutive days before it can activate.

With 30 validators supporting the proposal as of September 20, the upgrade is currently scheduled to activate on September 29 at 14:06 UTC, assuming the voting pattern remains unchanged.

However, the current support level does not guarantee activation. Validators can change their votes before the deadline, and a drop below the required threshold would reset the 14-day voting period. That could push activation back by several weeks.

XRPL’s published amendment rules indicate that two of the 30 current supporters could still change their votes before the voting period ends.

The Batch amendment has also already gone through one failed activation attempt. An earlier version was withdrawn in 2026 after auditors discovered a vulnerability that could potentially have permitted unauthorized transactions. No user funds were affected by the issue.

The revised version was released on September 14 and has completed three external reviews. It has now reached the final validator-voting stage, marking its closest approach to activation since the earlier version was withdrawn.

Ledger Improvements Do Not Guarantee More XRP Demand

The 30-35 validator support puts Batch on course for activation, but it does not guarantee either the upgrade’s final approval or a subsequent increase in XRP’s market value.

Importantly, Batch can operate without requiring XRP. As a result, combining several settlement operations into one atomic transaction does not automatically create new demand for the token.

The longer-term effect on XRP will instead depend on actual usage. Asset managers reportedly testing the technology would need to move real production activity onto the ledger, potentially creating additional liquidity requirements and transaction demand.

Ripple’s delivery-versus-payment functionality could provide useful infrastructure for institutional settlement, but greater network functionality and stronger demand for XRP are not necessarily the same outcome. Similar distinctions have emerged around Ripple’s other payment integrations and their effects on the XRP market.

XRP’s 22.2% weekly gain has also occurred during a broader crypto-market advance, with Bitcoin climbing 13.9% over the same period.

The fact that both assets rallied does not establish that expectations surrounding Batch caused XRP’s move higher. Current data does not isolate the upgrade as the specific driver of the token’s rally.

The Real Test Begins After Activation

If validator support remains above the required level, the Batch amendment will go live on September 29 at 14:06 UTC, converting Ripple’s all-or-nothing settlement capability from a proposed feature into an active part of the XRP Ledger.

If support falls below the threshold before then, the 14-day voting process will restart and create a new timeline for activation.

Once the upgrade is live, adoption will become the more important test. If the asset managers and commercial projects referenced by Akinyele begin conducting real transactions through the XRP Ledger, Batch could increase the network’s usefulness for institutional settlement over time.

But if that activity fails to emerge, the upgrade could still make the ledger more efficient without creating meaningful additional demand for XRP. In that scenario, the technical development would move forward while the question of whether it can attract new token demand would remain open.
