Dogecoin Labs is bringing together MyDoge, DogeOS and merchant payment services in a coordinated effort to expand DOGE’s real-world utility and give holders more ways to use their tokens across applications and businesses.
The teams responsible for the Dogecoin wallet, application platform and payment tools are forming Dogecoin Labs to build a more connected ecosystem where DOGE can be used beyond simply holding or transferring the cryptocurrency.
Established in partnership with the Dogecoin Foundation, Dogecoin Labs will own and operate MyDoge, DogeOS and Such App, according to an announcement shared with CoinDesk. Jordan Jefferson, the founder of MyDoge and DogeOS, will head the organization as CEO.
The initiative links three key elements of the proposed ecosystem. DogeOS provides infrastructure for developers to build applications, MyDoge allows users to discover and access those products, and Such App enables merchants to accept DOGE payments. Such App’s beta currently supports invoicing and in-person QR code payments, although its integration with DogeOS has yet to be developed.
Dogecoin launched in 2013 as a joke cryptocurrency featuring a Shiba Inu mascot and has since become one of the industry’s longest-running digital assets. DOGE recently traded near $0.082 after gaining 3.9% over the previous 24 hours.
MyDoge said its user base has exceeded 500,000 without relying on paid customer acquisition. The wallet’s recently released V3 update introduces connections to applications being developed on DogeOS. However, the announcement did not reveal how many of those users are active or have tested the available applications.
The Dogecoin Foundation and its commercial subsidiary, House of Doge, are contributing intellectual property and development resources to the venture. The foundation will maintain its focus on open-source development, advocacy and community support, while Dogecoin Labs will concentrate on commercial products and business expansion.
DogeOS launched its public testnet on September 30, allowing developers to experiment with lending platforms, exchanges and games modeled on Ethereum applications using test DOGE. These services operate separately from Dogecoin’s main blockchain, which primarily handles transfers of its native cryptocurrency.
Despite the testnet launch, DogeOS’s public documentation still listed its featured applications as “coming soon” three weeks later, indicating that the ecosystem’s consumer-facing products remain under development.
The project also has work to complete on its proposed security connection with Dogecoin’s blockchain. DogeOS intends to let the native network verify mathematical proofs confirming that applications have executed correctly. However, the protocol change required to enable this functionality remains a draft proposal.
Until that mechanism is implemented, users will need to rely on designated DogeOS operators and hardware to verify that applications are functioning as intended.
