Crypto Week Ahead: Aug. 24–28
Bitcoin is heading into the last full week of August after delivering one of its strongest monthly performances in years. BTC has risen 23% month-to-date, putting it on course for its best August since 2017, when it gained 65%, according to CoinGlass. Historically, the median August return has been around -7%.
The rally now faces a series of potentially market-moving events, including U.S. inflation and growth data and the Jackson Hole symposium later this week.
“Bitcoin enters next week with considerable momentum, but also with a much higher bar to clear after its strongest weekly rally in years,” Daniela Hathorn, a senior market analyst at Capital.com, told CoinDesk. Investors are expected to focus heavily on Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s keynote speech at Jackson Hole.
Hathorn said a dovish message that reduces expectations for additional Fed tightening could maintain the weaker-dollar and lower-yield environment supporting Bitcoin. A surprisingly hawkish tone, however, could encourage traders to take profits.
Hong Yea, co-founder and CEO of onchain investment platform Grvt, said the week could be defined by the “collision of Jackson Hole with geopolitical risk.” Tensions surrounding the U.S.-Iran conflict remain unresolved, while the war in Ukraine continues to raise concerns about further escalation.
