Jeffrey Huang, better known as Machi Big Brother, suffered a dramatic reversal on Hyperliquid after his trading account fell from a high of $12.25 million to approximately $21,000 following a liquidation on October 15, 2026.
Blockchain analytics account Lookonchain reported that Huang had transformed an initial $56,000 into $12.25 million over four months. However, the account’s value subsequently plunged to around $21,800, wiping out nearly all of its peak valuation and demonstrating the risks associated with leveraged crypto trading.
The liquidation took place during a broader derivatives market downturn, with Bitcoin falling below $81,000 and Ethereum approaching $2,380. When leveraged traders face adverse price movements, declining collateral can push their positions below required margin levels, forcing exchanges to close trades and potentially intensifying selling pressure.
According to Bitget Research, crypto derivatives liquidations reached approximately $811 million on October 14. Open interest remained close to $140.9 billion after the selloff. Another liquidation event during the 24 hours leading up to October 9 totaled $1.09 billion, including roughly $1.05 billion in long positions. This concentration of losses among bullish traders illustrates how quickly market declines can undermine leveraged bets on rising prices.
Macroeconomic uncertainty further weighed on investor sentiment. September’s annual inflation rate came in at 3.7%, exceeding the expected 3.6%. Stronger-than-anticipated inflation can reduce hopes for near-term interest-rate cuts and reinforce expectations of tighter financial conditions, creating additional headwinds for risk-sensitive assets such as cryptocurrencies.
Ethereum also encountered pressure from institutional investment flows. U.S. spot Ether exchange-traded funds experienced $542.2 million in net outflows during the week ending October 9. Against this backdrop, Bitcoin’s decline below $81,000 and Ether’s approach toward $2,380 reflected wider market weakness rather than an isolated trading event.
Bitcoin Support Break Adds to Liquidation Concerns
Bitcoin’s $80,000–$81,000 support range became a closely watched level as the cryptocurrency slipped below $81,000. A breakdown beneath an important technical zone can prompt traders to cut exposure, activate stop-loss orders and trigger the forced closure of leveraged positions, potentially accelerating price declines.
Machi Big Brother Loses Nearly All of His Trading Gains
Huang’s reported account history highlights an extraordinary change in fortunes. Starting with $56,000, he reportedly reached a peak balance of $12.25 million within four months before liquidation reduced the account to approximately $21,800. The decline represents roughly 99.8% of the reported peak account value.
Hyperliquid’s perpetual futures market enables traders to control positions larger than their deposited collateral by borrowing exposure through leverage. If losses cause a trader’s margin to fall below the required threshold, the platform may forcibly close the position. The remaining account balance depends on factors such as available collateral, position adjustments and trade execution.
A key consideration is the difference between a peak account valuation and realized profits. An account can temporarily display substantial gains while positions remain open, but an unfavorable price move may erase much of that value before the trader can secure the gains.
Hyperliquid has hosted other large leveraged Ether positions, reflecting the scale of derivatives activity on the platform. However, separate trades should not be treated as evidence of the specific positions or transactions behind Huang’s reported losses.
Following the liquidation, Huang reportedly resumed trading and opened another long position in Ethereum with 25x leverage. The trade is designed to benefit from rising ETH prices, but the same leverage magnifies losses if the market moves lower. With such a high leverage ratio, a relatively small adverse price change can substantially reduce the position’s margin buffer.
The October 15 episode underscores how quickly leveraged trading gains can reverse. Huang’s reported account rose from $56,000 to $12.25 million before collapsing to roughly $21,800. The risk surrounding his new Ethereum long will depend on ETH’s subsequent price movements, but its precise liquidation threshold remains unconfirmed without verified information about the entry price, position size, collateral and margin terms.
