XRP Ledger Adds Stripe-Owned Privy Wallets Amid AI Payment Growth

The partnership will allow software to purchase online services through XRP and RLUSD, though the extent to which these transactions reflect meaningful economic activity remains uncertain.

Ripple is bringing Privy’s wallet infrastructure, owned by Stripe, to the XRP Ledger, giving financial applications and AI agents the ability to create accounts, store digital assets and make payments without requiring users to operate wallets manually.

Under the integration, developers can build wallet functionality directly into their products and enable transfers involving XRP, Ripple’s dollar-pegged RLUSD stablecoin and other assets issued on the network, according to a release shared with CoinDesk.

The technology could help payment providers introduce dollar-denominated transfers without asking customers to manage the private keys that control their funds.

Privy supplies the underlying wallet infrastructure, allowing developers to avoid building these systems from scratch. The platform also supports exporting private keys and recovery phrases, enabling users to move their wallets to other services when needed.

Businesses may also use the technology to provide AI agents and automated bots with funded wallets for purchasing digital services. Privy’s documentation explains that server-managed wallets allow software to store and spend funds, including through x402, a payment protocol that enables access to paid data and other online services.

For instance, an AI agent requesting premium data can receive a payment demand, approve the transaction and access the requested information after the payment is verified. This process allows software to pay for individual requests automatically without requiring a person to complete each checkout.

CoinDesk reached out to the XRP Ledger Foundation for details on applications using the integration and information about the volume of network payments attributable to AI agents.

The announcement follows growing reports of automated payment activity on the XRP Ledger.

Last week, RippleX Head of Engineering J. Ayo Akinyele said on X that the network had processed over 13 million agent payments through x402, accounting for approximately 25% of its ledger activity.

Meanwhile, figures published by the XRPL AI Hub, run by payments infrastructure developer t54, showed more than 14.3 million cumulative transactions involving 169 registered merchants as of Wednesday.

Despite the substantial transaction count, the total amount transferred remains relatively modest.

The dashboard listed cumulative payments of roughly 6,991 XRP and 12,752 RLUSD. The figures indicate that many transactions involve minimal amounts, suggesting that software is primarily paying for individual requests rather than conducting high-value transfers.

Ripple initially introduced developer tools for AI-driven payments in June, allowing agents to create wallets, monitor balances and purchase services using XRP or RLUSD. In September, the company extended the toolkit to support a payment standard developed by Stripe and payments blockchain Tempo. The update also enabled developers to fund recurring requests using XRP rather than settling every payment separately.

According to Tuesday’s announcement, Ripple and Privy intend to expand the integration with additional features, including policy-based spending controls and mechanisms for covering users’ network fees.

However, integrating a wallet into an application does not remove the requirement to fund the account before it can process transactions.

Privy’s documentation states that a new XRP Ledger account must receive the network’s minimum reserve of 1 XRP to become active. This means an initial XRP deposit is necessary even if the account will be used only to transfer RLUSD or other dollar-pegged stablecoins.
