Bitcoin’s declining dominance mirrors its price slump, though observers indicate altcoins are not poised for a surge.

Bitcoin’s Pullback Signals Deleveraging, Not an Altcoin Rally

Bitcoin (BTC $84,392.84) has dropped sharply this month, with its market dominance—the share of BTC relative to the broader cryptocurrency market—also falling. While a lower dominance is often seen as a rotation into altcoins, analysts say the current trend reflects a market reset rather than the start of an altcoin season.

Data on prices, cross-pair performance, and on-chain activity suggest the market is clearing excess leverage instead of entering a high-risk altcoin phase. Over the past month, BTC has fallen nearly 16%, with dominance slipping from 61.4% to 58.9%. Other major tokens, including Ethereum (ETH $2,741.79), Cardano (ADA $0.3976), Dogecoin (DOGE $0.1384), and Solana (SOL $126.63), have recorded even sharper declines.

Some trading pairs show selective resilience. XRP/BTC has remained strong, while ETH/BTC has dipped only slightly, indicating targeted stability rather than a broad market shift. Analysts attribute these movements to the market digesting leftover leverage from October’s liquidation events.

“Bitcoin’s drawdown reflects ongoing deleveraging that started with October’s liquidation,” said Rohit Apte, Head of Markets at Hex Trust. “Until the majors stabilize and consolidate, we are not yet in an altcoin season.”

On-chain metrics reinforce this view. Ethereum’s ecosystem is active but stable, with Base leading roughly 19 million daily transactions and increased token creation via Coinbase’s Launchpad and Smart Wallet tools. Networks like Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, and Celo maintain steady activity without spikes in fees, suggesting normal market behavior rather than speculative mania.

For now, traders are reducing exposure cautiously rather than chasing higher-beta assets. Until BTC and ETH find firmer ranges, the market is expected to drift sideways, keeping a full-scale altcoin season on hold
