BTC-e

BTC-e was a cryptocurrency trading platform active until its website was seized by the U.S. government. Founded in July 2011, the exchange handled approximately 3% of global Bitcoin trading volume as of February 2015. Prior to its shutdown on July 25, 2017, BTC-e facilitated trading in U.S. dollars, Russian rubles, and euros, as well as several cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Litecoin, Namecoin, Novacoin, Peercoin, Dash, and Ethereum.

The platform was a key component of the CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index when the index was launched in September 2013.

BTC-e was operated by ALWAYS EFFICIENT LLP, a company registered in London, with officers listed as Sandra Gina Esparon and Evaline Sophie Joubert, and two individuals with significant control: Alexander Buyanov and Andrii Shvets.

On July 26, 2017, the U.S. Department of Justice moved to shut down BTC-e, charging the platform and its alleged operator, Alexander Vinnik, in a 21-count indictment. The charges included running an international money laundering scheme and allegedly laundering funds stolen during the Mt. Gox hack.
