Bank of China
The Bank of China is one of China’s four largest state-owned commercial banks. Although legally distinct from its subsidiary, Bank of China (Hong Kong), the two maintain close ties in management and cooperate in various areas, including the resale of BOC’s insurance and securities services.
Founded in 1912 by the Republican government to replace the Daqing Bank, it is the oldest bank still operating in mainland China. From its inception until 1942, the bank issued banknotes on behalf of the government alongside other major institutions such as the Farmers Bank of China, Bank of Communications, and the Central Bank of the Republic of China. The bank’s headquarters are located in Xicheng District, Beijing.
As of December 31, 2009, the Bank of China was the second-largest lender in China and the fifth-largest bank in the world by market capitalization. By the end of 2017, it had become the fourth-largest bank globally in terms of assets, following the other three major Chinese banks.
