Panama City Approves Bitcoin and Ethereum for Tax and Municipal Payments

Panama City to Accept Crypto Payments for Taxes and Services, Mayor Confirms

Panama City is set to allow residents to pay for public services using cryptocurrency, according to an announcement by Mayor Mayer Mizrachi on X (formerly Twitter).

Key Details:

Locals will soon be able to use bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH), and stablecoins like USDC and tether (USDT) to pay for taxes, parking fines, permits, and various other municipal fees.

“While previous administrations attempted to pass legislation to enable this, we found a streamlined approach that doesn’t require new laws,” Mizrachi explained. “By law, public institutions must receive payments in dollars, so we’ve partnered with a bank that will handle crypto payments and convert them instantly to USD.”

Mizrachi emphasized that the move is designed to enable a seamless integration of crypto into both the local economy and government systems.
