Crypto’s New ‘Inverse Cramer’? The Trader Whose Bets Others Are Profiting From by Doing the Opposite
“The winning strategy lately? Just do the opposite of James Wynn,” joked blockchain analyst Lookonchain, sparking comparisons to the infamous Jim Cramer—CNBC’s high-energy, polarizing stock guru.
James Wynn, a pseudonymous trader on Hyperliquid best known for his bold $1 billion bitcoin short position, might be carving out a new kind of notoriety—as crypto’s very own “Inverse Cramer.”
For those not in the know: Jim Cramer is a former hedge fund manager turned TV personality whose bullish and bearish calls have become a meme among retail traders, many of whom famously profit by betting against his advice. So much so that an “Inverse Cramer ETF” was even launched (and later shuttered), cementing the concept in trading folklore.
Now, the crypto community may have found its counterpart in James Wynn’s trading style—and a savvy counter-trader cashing in by doing exactly the opposite.
Lookonchain revealed on X that a trader identified only as 0x2258 has been consistently “counter-trading” Wynn—shorting when Wynn goes long, and going long when Wynn shorts. Over the past week, this inverse approach has reportedly yielded around $17 million in profits, while Wynn himself has seen losses totaling approximately $98 million.
Making $17 million in a week simply by betting against one trader is no small feat. But experts caution this may be a fleeting edge, warning that crypto markets are notoriously volatile—rapid reversals could quickly turn gains into losses without careful risk management.
James Wynn himself appeared undeterred after a full liquidation wiped out a position over the weekend, stating, “I’ll run it back, I always do. And I’ll enjoy doing it. I like playing the game.”
So while the classic Reddit joke, “How much would you have made doing the exact opposite of Jim Cramer?” may not fully apply here yet, the lesson is clear: in crypto’s perception-driven arena, even your profit and loss statement can become the next big meme.
