OpenAI Targets $30B Raise at $1.4T Valuation as IPO Plans Slip

OpenAI is looking to raise at least $30 billion in new capital at a valuation of roughly $1.4 trillion, according to Bloomberg, as the ChatGPT maker delays plans for a public listing and continues expanding its AI business.

The proposed valuation does not include the new funding. The capital raise comes after OpenAI postponed its planned 2026 initial public offering and would provide the company with additional resources ahead of a potential future listing.

OpenAI’s previous major financing came in March, when the company raised $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation, including the new investment.

CEO Sam Altman has said OpenAI will not go public this year. He cited increased concerns over artificial intelligence safety and the difficulties of adjusting to systems that are becoming more capable.

Despite the IPO delay, OpenAI’s business has continued to expand. Its annualized revenue run rate surpassed $40 billion over the summer and has reportedly grown 70% since July, Bloomberg reported.

The company has also been adding new commercial products. OpenAI recently introduced Dots, an AI agent designed to operate continuously, alongside a subscription option costing $500.

The fundraising comes as competition among major AI companies intensifies. Anthropic, another leading AI developer, is expected to launch an IPO in November. Its prospectus reportedly details plans to spend $518 billion on cloud computing and infrastructure.

If Anthropic proceeds with the listing, the offering could place its valuation above $2 trillion.
