Polymarket Puts Trump-Xi Handshake Odds at 50%

A 10-15 second handshake between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping has emerged as the most likely greeting outcome on Polymarket ahead of their September 24 meeting in Washington, with traders currently assigning it about a 50% probability.

The same market places the odds of a hug at 5% and a kiss at 1%. The contracts do not attempt to measure the likelihood of a diplomatic breakthrough. Instead, they focus on the visible choreography of the leaders’ first interaction.

As of September 22, the handshake contract had recorded approximately $4,200 in trading volume and $57,800 in liquidity. By comparison, Polymarket’s broader Trump-Xi prediction dashboard had accumulated around $30.6 million in total volume.

That difference highlights where traders are putting most of their capital. The broader dashboard covers issues with potential policy consequences, including tariffs, artificial intelligence cooperation and Taiwan-related developments, while the greeting contracts focus exclusively on what happens in front of the cameras.

Traders Expect a Conventional Greeting

The 10-15 second range reflects a formal diplomatic greeting rather than an arbitrary midpoint, according to Polymarket’s market description.

Trump and Xi displayed a cordial public tone during their May meeting in Beijing, when both leaders emphasized cooperation despite unresolved disagreements over Taiwan and other issues.

The current pricing appears to reflect a similar expectation for the upcoming meeting. Preparatory discussions in New York have reportedly centered on extending the bilateral trade truce, establishing AI safety mechanisms and addressing non-sensitive trade matters.

However, those developments do not establish what the leaders will accomplish during private negotiations.

The handshake contract is based on observable footage. Whether the greeting lasts 10 seconds or 15 seconds can be determined from video, while the success of trade negotiations or other diplomatic discussions may remain uncertain for much longer.

Small Contract, Clear Resolution

The difference between observable events and substantive outcomes is particularly important for prediction markets.

Polymarket’s larger Trump-Xi contracts carry far more trading volume because their outcomes concern tariffs, trade and other issues with broader economic implications. The handshake, hug and kiss markets have comparatively small volumes despite attracting attention because their outcomes are easy to verify.

The September 24 meeting gives traders a near-term event that should resolve quickly once footage of the leaders’ arrival and greeting becomes available.

If Trump and Xi shake hands for 10-15 seconds, the market’s current leading outcome would be met. A significantly shorter or longer handshake would fall outside the favored range.

A hug, currently priced at 5%, or a kiss, at 1%, would represent substantially less common greeting scenarios based on current market prices.

The probabilities are not fixed ahead of the summit. Polymarket prices can change as new information emerges and traders adjust their positions.

Whatever happens when Trump and Xi first meet, the contract will answer a narrow question about their public greeting. It will not determine whether the trade truce is extended, whether the two countries reach an AI agreement or whether broader U.S.-China tensions ease.
