South Korea’s Korbit Set for Major Transformation Under Mirae’s Crypto Push

Mirae Asset is looking to transform South Korean crypto exchange Korbit into a broader digital finance platform, with the company’s upcoming rebrand to Digital X serving as the first step in a much larger strategy involving real-world assets (RWAs), stablecoins, and digital assets.

The South Korean financial powerhouse said its goal extends beyond gaining market share in the local crypto sector. Instead, it plans to develop Korbit into an “intelligent investment platform” that connects investment research, education, market data, and digital asset services.

“We plan to expand investor education and research capabilities and build Digital X into an intelligent investment platform where knowledge, information, and detailed investment insights are naturally integrated,” Mirae Asset said.

The new Digital X name reflects the company’s broader vision. Mirae said the letter “X” symbolizes an unexplored future and the potential created when different forms of value and financial technology converge.

Mirae Asset Financial Group is one of Asia’s largest independent financial and asset management firms, overseeing approximately $1 trillion in assets under management as of May.

Building more than a crypto exchange

The company’s ambitions go beyond a simple rebranding effort.

Mirae Asset plans to create an interconnected investment ecosystem that brings together real-world assets, security token offerings, stablecoins, traditional financial products, and cryptocurrencies. Rather than competing purely for trading volume, the firm wants Digital X to become a foundational platform for digital finance.

Currently, Korbit holds less than 1% of South Korea’s crypto market, far behind leading exchanges such as Upbit and Bithumb. However, Mirae Asset said its objective is not to surpass existing exchanges but to contribute to the sustainable growth of the digital asset industry.

The company said it intends to combine Mirae Asset’s global investment expertise with Korbit’s blockchain capabilities to support the expansion of digital assets in both South Korea and international markets.

The strategy positions Digital X as a one-stop investment platform that could combine institutional-grade financial knowledge, market research, educational resources, and digital asset infrastructure.

Mirae Asset also emphasized that the platform will follow strict compliance standards, including anti-money laundering (AML), know-your-customer (KYC), and fraud prevention requirements. The approach highlights the company’s focus on attracting institutional participants alongside retail investors.

Mirae Asset Consulting, an affiliate of the group, recently increased its ownership in Korbit to 97.15%, completing the acquisition after receiving approval from South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission.

The company said the acquisition process followed regulatory procedures and was structured based on business alignment, affiliate roles, and potential opportunities in the digital asset sector.

Mirae Asset added that it currently has no plans to purchase the remaining shares of Korbit, choosing instead to focus on strengthening Digital X’s competitiveness and expanding its role in the evolving digital finance market.
