Strategy Stock Becomes Key Crypto Hedge Amid Market Volatility, Says Tom Lee
Strategy’s massive 650,000-BTC holdings have positioned the company as a “pressure valve” for the crypto market, according to Tom Lee, chairman and CEO of Bitmine Immersion.
Lee said Strategy (MSTR) has emerged as a go-to risk-management tool for crypto investors, a factor contributing to the stock’s 43% decline over the past month. “Strategy is probably the most important stock to watch right now,” Lee told CNBC. “It’s effectively a bitcoin proxy and the most liquid name in the market.”
With few options to hedge directly in crypto markets, institutional traders have increasingly shorted Strategy shares. The firm’s massive bitcoin holdings tie its stock price closely to BTC$90,892.05, making it one of the most effective indirect hedges available.
“In crypto, when investors try to hedge bitcoin or ether exposure, there are very few instruments deep enough to handle that flow,” Lee explained. “So they short the most liquid proxies—and that’s MicroStrategy.”
Lee noted that crypto derivatives for bitcoin and ether remain shallow, limiting their usefulness for large positions. “Anyone holding a sizable bitcoin long has almost no way to hedge effectively in crypto derivatives,” he said. Strategy, however, offers a solution: “Its option chain is so liquid that traders can hedge their entire crypto exposure through Strategy instead.”
As a result, Lee said, the stock is “absorbing much of the hedging pressure the crypto industry is trying to offload to protect their long positions.”
He also pointed to the ongoing fallout from the Oct. 10 market crash, which wiped out $20 billion and disrupted liquidity. Market makers—the “central bank” of crypto, in Lee’s view—remain impaired, leaving altcoins, miner stocks, and bitcoin proxies like Strategy thinly traded.
Strategy has been among the hardest-hit assets during the current downturn, a trend Lee attributes to its role as a market stress-release valve. He warned that the company’s growing use as a hedge highlights underlying structural fragilities in the crypto ecosystem.
